From The Aristocats to The Avengers

How have the preferences of movies changed over the last 50 years?
How is the network between directors and actors, and the association with the average score of the movies?
What are the main factors that have influenced the popularity of movies?

IMMA is working on a project with a dataset obtained from The Movie Database (TMDb), a community-built database with data related to movies and TV shows, which includes information on more than 500000 movies and 90000 TV shows.

The data extracted for the analysis is obtained through the TMDb API, extracting for each year in the series of 50 years from 1970 to 2019, the 160 most popular movies per year, based on the popularity index of the site, therefore obtaining 8000 data points. There are 21 dimensions in our dataset, covering different types of variables (numeric, categorical and time variables). Some of the main dimensions included are:

Release Date: exact date in which the movie was released (in the US).

Popularity: metric which indicates the popularity of the movie based on several variables, such as number of users who added it as a ‘favourite’ or number of users that have it on their watchlist.

Genre(s) of the movie.

Budget and revenue of the movie, if available, expressed in US dollars.

Average rating on the site and number of votes.

Director of the movie and gender of the director.

Actors that appear in the movie, their gender, age, popularity and the order in which they appear on the page of the film.

Country in which they were produced and the main language spoken in the film.

Based on this dataset, we formulate the following research questions:

How have the preferences of movies changed over the last 50 years?

How is the network between directors and actors, and the association with the average score of the movies?

And what are the main factors that have influenced the popularity of movies?

If my group were not doing a project on music, we would be doing one on movies! Amazing proposal! If I may offer a suggestion, if my guess is right, maybe there will be a prevalence of American movies in this popularity top 160. Maybe it could be interesting to offer a quick look at some statistics excluding the US? It could be that the trends outside Hollywood prove themselves interesting as well.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing progress from this group!
