Force-Directed Network

In a previous post we explored the relation between actors using static networks. Today, we are going to present different designs using a force-directed layout.

In a first step, we explored the connection between actors and directors. We already discussed this design in a previous post.

Next, we wanted to discover the muses of some of the most famous directors. To do that, we filtered the data set to show only actors that have worked with a director four or more times. We found some well-known partnerships such as David Fincher and Brad Pitt, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro or Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. In addition, it was interesting to spot actors that are linked with various directors. Such is the case of Leonardo Di Caprio with Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. We could extracted some valuable information from this graph. However, we realized most of the actors in this network are supporting actors and in many cases relatives of the directors. We think that we can't consider those as muses so we should define another filter to rule them out.

Lastly, we decided to expand the network including also links between actors that have worked together. This is interesting because now we can also visualize groups of actors like the one in the top right corner of this network.
