In this post we are going to present a new visualization that we have created to understand more the relationships between the films of a group of selected directors that we are aiming to explore. Some earlier versions of the network containing actors and directors have already been presented, and with this visualization we want to explore more the characteristics of films linked to those directors.
To do so, we have built a scatter plot in which each point represents one of the movies, with the axes representing the popularity and the number of votes received by that movie, and the color and size are linked to the revenue and the budget of those movies. Some trends that were already suspected are confirmed in this plot, such that movies are usually more popular if they have been released recently and their number of votes is high. Also, high budget films and with high box office tend to be more popular as well.
Also we included a slider to highlight movies from a particular year and also to select the movies included from a particular director which could help us visualize differences between directors and also to check where a particular movie of a director stands between other movies released in a the year of release. With this we could see that in general movies for each director fall between a certain area in the plot, meaning that in general there is also an effect associated with the director that influences the popularity and other variables related to those movies.
You can have a check to this visual here. Next steps will be to combine all our visualizations and put together all the insights that we have gained during these past weeks.
