First visualizations

In this post we are going to present some of our first attempts to translate our initial sketches into real visualizations using Vega. In this instance we are going to focus on the sketches designed to answer our question related to the evolution during time of preferences in movies (which genres are more prevalent, what types of movies are more popular...). Our first sketch was a heatmap of months and years in which movies were released, and colored according to the average popularity of films during that period. The average popularity had to be presented in logarithmic scale to reduce the impact of outliers.

The other sketch was intended to show the evolution of the different genres across time. Both a line plot and a stacked bar chart were initially tried, but had to be discarded due to the high number of genres included which difficulted the interpretability of the visualization and makes the visualization confuse and not clear.

To get a better visualization, this design was modified to a scatter plot in which the size of the point corresponds to the average box office per movie in a given year, separating by genre. With this design it is possible to identify which genres have become more prominent as time has passed and which ones have faded or maintained regularly across years in a better way.

The next steps for these visualizations will be adding more information to this designs and to link both visuals, so interacting with one of them will allow to see more specific information on the other. More updates will be coming in our following posts!
